Where is God When Bad Things Happen to Good People?

Have you ever thought where is God when bad things happen to good people?

Late this afternoon, I was chatting with one of my caregroup friend on Whatsapp about The Shack. One thing I have to confess is how much I agree with the book, when Papa (God) and Jesus said they - as in the Holy Trinity - is always there when bad things happen to good people. But why aren't they doing anything about it? Why aren't they stopping all the bad things from happening?

One thing I could thought of is God is always there, in the midst of everything, regardless of it being a good thing or a bad thing. Just like our earthly parents who give us freedom, our heavenly Father is giving us all the freedom we want - even let us have control over all the things He has created for us on earth.

To put it simply, God doesn't want to rob us off our freedom, so He did not stop the bad things from happening. In this freedom we are given, we made choices in everything we do and those choices would sometimes lead to destruction. That is when bad things happen to both good and bad people.

God doesn't want to dictate us. Having to stop all the bad things from happening would mean He is robbing us from our freedom and that isn't the basis of giving us freedom. Would you want your parents to lock you down all the times, or make decisions for you in everything? No, I wouldn't for sure. That would be the rationale of His love for us.

I believe this topic has been discussed time and again by scholars. Skepticisms and criticisms have definitely floated from grieves and brokenness. But, one thing I'm sure of is, good things would always - yes, always - catch up with the sorrows and change lives in every significant way. I, for one, is a classic example of experiencing this life-altering goodness.

So, remember - even though you have fallen into the lowest point of the valley, thinking where is He, and climbed up the rocks in despair, you'll soon see Him standing on top of the valley and understand that He is actually teaching you how to climb up those slippery rocks your body could best adapt to and in the midst off all these, you learnt to be independent of Him.

I just couldn't imagine how much tears He has cried by letting us seek our freedom and make terrible mistakes along the way. So, think twice before you doubt Him again.
